Lost or Damaged OCI Card? Here’s What to do

An Overseas Citizenship of India(OCI) card is a lifelong visa that allows foreign citizens of Indian origin to enter and stay in India without repeatedly applying for a visa. It also gives certain benefits like owning property (except agricultural land) and exemption from registering with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) for long stays.

If your OCI card is lost or damaged, you must act quickly. First, file a police complaint—this is required if the card is lost. Next, apply online through the Government of India’s OCI portal under “OCI Miscellaneous Services” for reissue of a duplicate card due to loss or damage.

In most cases, you will need to send a printed copy of your application, along with supporting documents, to the relevant Indian Mission, Post, or FRRO, depending on your place of residence. The fee for a duplicate card is US $100 (or Rs 5,170 if applying within India).

The application process involves submitting a completed online form, uploading a recent photograph and signature, and presenting original documents in person or through an authorised representative for verification.

Once your application is acknowledged, authorities generally process and issue the duplicate OCI card within about one month from receiving the hard-copy application.

The OCI card is a key travel and residency document for people of Indian origin. Losing or damaging it can delay travel and affect access to benefits. Knowing the replacement steps ensures minimal disruption.
